Sickness, Healing And Miracles

A few years back I was battling with a severe sickness, and when the Doctor told me the reality of the situation, fear gripped my heart. The Lord then used Romans 8:11 to release me from the grip of fear, death and bondage.

Romans 8:11 — “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwells in you.”

What does quicken mean? How will our perishable human bodies be quickened? In reply to these questions, a few other versions of scripture tell us that our mortal bodies receive life.

This life is in the Son and because we have the life-giving Son who is the life-giving spirit abiding in us, we have this life in our spirits.

When there is a mental issue, this life of the Son can permeate from our spirit into our soul through the word in us. Likewise, when there is a sickness attacking our bodies, this same life can permeate from our spirit into our physical bodies. However, this is not some magic or ‘name it, claim it stuff.

When we use the word of God as our medication, we must know that it does not have any side effects. This does not mean we reject natural medicine from the doctors around us. God can and will use His word or natural medicine to heal us, or even both at times.

But when we take the word of God, Christ in us releases His life from our inner man, from our spirit to our bodies. This life can move in all the organs of our body and heal them. When we understand and apply scripture, we can surely experience the life of the Son of God in our bodies and be healthy and revived again.

When we pray for the sick, we become the plug-in point through which the power and life of God are released. Whoever you are, whether a pastor, leader, elder, or one who is not in any leadership position, the crucial thing is that you have the life of God in you. We must keep asking God to heal people because He still heals today as He always has.

Hebrews 13:8 — Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever!

The main cause of amazing miracles happening in our lives is because Christ occupies our hearts and spirit. When Jesus rode the donkey and its colt on His way to Jerusalem, the donkey moved on garments, palm tree leaves, and other stuff which were laid on the ground by the people who welcomed Jesus.

Jesus’ feet did not touch those things which were laid on the ground before Him. The donkey carried the Lord on its back. We can tread on serpents, scorpions, and every power of the enemy in our lives because Christ is enthroned in our hearts.

This kind of message gives the believer the impression that if he can take a scripture and say it a thousand times, it will come to pass. This is not what the Bible teaches. Following Jesus Christ is not a license to all the material possessions men desire in this life but a way to eternal life. Our hope should not be to have our best life now but to have the attitude of the apostle Paul, who had learned to be content in whatever state He was in. God does not promise us an easy life but does promise us Oneness in every situation.

Philippians 4:11 — I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content in any circumstance.

Our affectionate Father supplies us with what is most beneficial for us, and only He can determine that. Many committed Christians have prayed and even pleaded for healing from sickness or disability yet have never been healed.

Romans 8:26-27 — In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how we should pray, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with inexpressible groanings. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes on behalf of the saints according to God’s will.

When our faith is not built on the solid foundation of God’s truth it will easily crumble and fail. When we get sick, however, know that “Life” in abundance is available to us because it is what Jesus Christ came to give us. He is the source of this Life and when we pray, if we are healed, we thank Him and if we are not healed we still praise Him in all circumstances.

A.W. Tozer writes,

“Miracles cannot be purchased with money. Miracles are not a performance like on a stage by a magician. John Wesley never preached signs and wonders once in his lifetime. However, the signs, wonders and miracles that followed John Wesley’s preaching were incredible. One time he had to make an appointment, and his horse fell lame and so he could not travel. Wesley got down on his knees beside his horse and prayed for its healing. Then he got back up and rode, without the horse limping, to where he was going.  While C. H. Spurgeon did not preach healing, he had more people delivered in answer to his prayer than any doctor in London. Those are the kinds of miracles I am talking about.”

In the kingdom of God, there are no magicians. In the kingdom of God, there is answered prayer. God answers prayer either because of His mercy, His grace or because He answers the prayer of righteous people. When we preach Christ and His kingdom, miracles are not unusual, but must not be our focus and priority.
