Trusting God’s Will in Uncontrollable Circumstances

Every person will, at some time in their lives, be confronted with circumstances that are beyond their ability to control. Whether it is a sickness, difficulties in a relationship or at a job, unemployment, or just becoming older, we often realise that we do not influence the result.

The only thing that is required of us is to exercise patience and, as the saying goes, “take things one day at a time.” Even though we normally acquire this knowledge later in life, it is often advantageous to acquire it at a younger age of learning.

On the other hand, coming to terms with the fact that we do not have control over our lives can not always be advantageous. It has the potential to make us feel sad and as if things would never make sense. We could get the question, “Why bother trying at all?”

James offers advice on how to continue with faith and confidence, and he suggests that they pray for the will of God to be carried out.

James 4:13-16 — Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into this or that town and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.” You do not know about tomorrow. What is your life like? For you are a puff of smoke that appears for a short time and then vanishes. You ought to say instead, “If the Lord is willing, then we will live and do this or that.” But as it is, you boast about your arrogant plans. All such boasting is evil.

Jesus emphasised the ability of His followers to pray that God’s will be carried out both on earth and in heaven using the Lord’s Prayer.

Matthew 6:10 — may your kingdom come, may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

This was an important idea that Jesus communicated to His disciples. During His prayer, Jesus taught that the will of God would be fulfilled through His sacrifice for the sake of our good. Through His death on the Cross, Jesus Christ made it possible for us to receive eternal life, providing us with comfort and direction from God in the here and now and throughout all eternity.

You must align yourself with the kingdom of God and obey His will, even when you are faced with circumstances beyond your control.
